The Proraso Brand Story Founded in 1908 by Ludovico Martelli, Proraso has been innovating professional highest-quality products in the shaving world for generations, and has evolved to become a staple of Italian culture. From the first Pre-Shave cream in 1948, to now, the Martelli family principles hold true: to create professional, quality products that deliver a pleasurable and impeccable shave, in the barbershop and at home. Proraso Shaving Soap in a Bowl, Sensitive Skin How to use: Soak your Proraso brush in a bowl or cup filled with hot water for a few minutes before your shave. Apply a warm, damp towel to your face (or splash face with warm water) to prep your face for shaving, then apply your favorite Proraso Pre-Shave Cream. Apply another hot towel to your face for a few seconds. After the brush has soaked, gently squeeze out excess water, still leaving the brush mostly wet. Apply the brush to the soap in fast, repeated circular motions to coat the brush bristles well. Spread on your beard and proceed with shaving. Close the lid after use to keep the soap from drying out (though, even if it does dry out, it will not lose its efficacy or beneficial properties when reused). Shave and rinse face thoroughly. For an optimal experience, finish with another application of your warm, damp towel, followed by your favorite Proraso After Shave Balm or Lotion. Short on time? Apply your favorite Proraso Pre-Shave Cream to your damp face (for optimal results). To build up a rich lather, run your shaving brush under hot water for about 30 seconds, if you don't have time to soak it. Apply the brush to the soap in fast, repeated circular motions to coat the brush bristles well. Spread on your beard, shave and rinse, following with your favorite Proraso After Shave Balm or Lotion. Close the lid after use to keep the soap from drying out (though, even if it does dry out, it will not lose its efficacy or beneficial properties when reused). That's actually one of our biggest points of difference -- the result of its manufacturing process -- and what makes Proraso soap so special. Because it has a much lower moisture content than other shave soaps, you’ll need more water on your shaving brush (we'd suggest soaking it for a few minutes prior to lathering), and perhaps just a touch more patience at first, to achieve that signature Proraso lather: rich, dense, elastic, and one that doesn’t dry out. Once you do, you’ll really see the difference (and why it’s become such a staple of shaving culture over the last 6 decades). Always use a Proraso Pre-Shave Cream It softens and straightens the hairs, making it easier to apply the shaving cream to your beard and pre-conditions the skin. Wrap your face in a warm, wet towel Just like traditional barbers do. Otherwise, shave after your morning shower when the skin is soft and hydrated from the warm water. The best lather comes from a brush and shaving cream or soap Applying shaving cream or soap with a brush increases the volume of your beard hair and allows for a closer shave. To build up a rich lather, wet your shaving brush and apply the cream in fast, repeated circular motions to coat the brush bristles well. Keep your razor clean Rinse the blade with hot water at least once every two swipes of the razor. Residue from past shaves can reduce the blades' effectiveness and increase the risk of damaging your skin. Also, remember to change your razor often. For the perfect shave, one pass just doesn't cut it Lather your face a second time and repeat the shave. Don't neglect your post-shave routine Rinse your face well and repeatedly to remove any residue. This is great. Love this version plus the shave cream that comes in a tube as well. This is grassy, herbal, lime as far as scent. Good for summer. Works up to a rich lather that does not irritate my skin, and provides a good shave (so much better than foam or foaming gel). The green (with eucalyptus and menthol) is refreshing but too strong for me. This is the perfect balance, and will not interfere with any aftershave or cologne you may want to use afterLathers easily like other proraso soaps-nice thick and slippery. It feels great afterward. It has very little scent of it's own so you can use whatever cologne you like and it won't fight it.Moisturizes and helps shave what more can you ask forGet a super shave and lasts a good amount of time! Been using this for years! The first time I use this I received it as a giftthis is one of my favorite shaving lubricants (?) ive used. a lot of shaving soaps that actually work well have like that musky man smell to it. the white proraso works great tho and has a more delicate soft smell that wont leave your legs smelling like a mans face. its slick, thic and lathers really easy. and because its kind of soft and pliable, i can break off a small piece roll a little ball and take just a little chunk on the go with me when i travel. The last time I bought this stuff was back in 2011. Then I purchased it again in Feb of 2015. The packaging has changed slightly, and so has the ingredient list. You can see an ingredient comparison chart for the two versions on one of the images. I am not a chemist, so I can't comment on whether it's a change for the better or worse. Gone from the new version seem to be all the parabens, which in theory should be a good thing. Gone is also propylene glycol which some people can be allergic to, so that should be a change for the better, as well. Aloe is also gone from the new version. I suppose oat extract is now used instead of it to provide some soothing effect. Thyme is also one of the new ingredients, but I'm not sure what purpose it serves... disinfectant possibly? As you can see, there are many other changes to the ingredient list - take a look for yourself.Fragrance: 3/5Both versions have a rather delicate citrus-coconut scent. To me personally the old version smelled a little nicer. The new version has more of a chemical undertone to it, but not bad.Shaving action: 5/5No complaints there. Both the old and the new version give a smooth shave as far as I can tell. Lubricity is not a problem, although I have recently switched to electric shaver (wet), so having a ton of lubricity isn't as much of an issue anymore. A good aftershave lotion or face cream is a must as your skin will likely feel dry right after the shave.Allergic reactions: 4/5Let's face it (pun), we all have different skin types and react to different allergens, so this is very personal. I remember after extensive use (a month or longer) of the old version, my skin would be very red, dried out, and burning, to the point where I had to stop using it. I haven't used the new version long enough yet to determine if the same thing will happen this time. So far so good. But I do feel the slight tingling sensation when I apply the lather to the face, which is probably caused by menthol. If your skin is super sensitive like mine, and you find out that this proraso product is just not gentle enough, I would recommend you try Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel. It's less expensive than Proraso, and it is the most gentle shaving product I have ever tried. Granted, the fragrance is boring (it smells like oats), but it kept me out of any facial skin allergic conditions in the past.White film residue:You may have seen some video reviews mentioning this. After you use this product for a while, you'll notice your shaving gear (razor, brush, bowl, sink, etc.) covered with very thin by stubborn white hazy film. I'm not sure which ingredient is responsible for this, but I've noticed this with both the old and the new version of the product.Summary: 4/5It's a nice shaving soap, but as mentioned earlier, we all have different levels of skin sensitivity, so while it might work for some, it may cause irritation to others. You just have to try it. If it works, that's great. If not, give that Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel a try.EDIT: can't seem to be able to add captions to images. The ones mentioning Aloe are for the old formula. This is great shaving cream! This scent is light and it does not break my face out. This is great used with a safety razor, but I have noticed it leaves a film on the razor that can cause dragging when shaving.I’ve since learned to mix it with morewater and a little bit of shave oil to cut down on drag, but it still leaves a film. That is easily rinsed off with a small soft brush and rubbing alcohol.Smells great and moisturizes but almost too much. My skin gets oily if I do not use a witch hazel toner and steamed towel on my face afterwards. Overall value for the money is good.I've probably tried every method of shaving available over the last 25 years or so, and going back to basics is the best thing I've ever done. This stuff, a shaving brush and a safety razor are the quickest, most comfortable and safest shave I've ever had. It came this morning and so I tried it straight away. I have sensitive skin which often means I end up allowing my beard to grow for a few days because shaving would make a mess of my skin, so I started out with maybe a week's growth. Lathered up with this stuff and 99% of the beard was gone in a couple of minutes. I followed up with another quick go around with the soap and razor and I was done in maybe another minute. The closest shave I've probably ever had, with no discomfort, no razor burn and no remaining stubble. The soap lathers up easily with the brush, and it produces a pleasantly cool sensation on the face. Other shaving products that claim to have a cooling effect usually make my skin react badly, often causing the opposite effect and making the skin hot, red and painful, but this soap just did its job, preparing the beard for the razor and keeping my skin soft, smooth and cool while I shaved. The razor glides exactly as it should, and the whole process is a joy where previously it was a tense, uncomfortable chore. Brilliant stuff. If you have sensitive skin and you're frustrated by the mass-produced crap available on supermarket shelves, if you've had enough of paying through the nose for razors with umpteen blades that don't actually work, and mean you spend 5 minutes shaving and 30 unclogging the blades, if you're curious about how men managed in the days before Gillette and Wilkinson Sword created their ridiculous tax on facial hair, get yourself a simple safety razor, a pack of blades (you can buy 50 or so for less than a Gillette Fusion, and each one will last a week or so), a shaving brush and this stuff. You won't regret it.I've seen this soap used on many on-line reviews and wanted to try it out. It comes in a bowl with a flip off lid and the soap is quite hard, not like a cream. It doesn't have a strong scent in the bowl or after lathering, the best I can describe it as is fresh soap, with maybe a tiny hint of citrus. The lathering was excellent and I enjoyed a very smooth and clean shave using it. The slickness is good and the cushion was better. I'd recommend this if you have sensitive skin or not, I don't, but I wanted to try this soap in particular from the Proraso range. It's a great every day shaving soap and tremendous value - I think the tub will last me ages.It had been a while since i used this, as i had been swayed by other products due to their cheap [rice. I was running out of shaving soap and decided to replenish. I had a look at others and decided to get this again, and i am very glad i did. I shaved tonight after my shower, using this in conjunction wish the Proraso pre/post shave cream, and it is the closest, smoothest shave i have had for a long time. I only needed one pass with my DE razor (i do not use overpriced, substandard, ghastly cartridge thigs) and i am very glad i chose this product again. Highly recommended. I think i will stick to Proraso from now on.The consistency of this product is a croap: softer than a soap and harder than a cream. That means that it takes a little more work than a true cream to get a proper lather, which out of preference I do on my face rather than in a bowl or mug. The aroma is fairly neutral - I can definitely smell the oatmeal, and it's perfectly pleasant. I'm not a fan of mentholated shaving products, and find the Proraso green range too pungent for my taste, but this is absolutely fine.It will deliver an unctuous lather that provides a good cushion and decent lubrication for the blade - in my case a traditional safety razor. Given that this type of shaving usually requires two or more passes, it's important that the lather doesn't degrade too quickly, and I've found that it holds up perfectly well to re-lather for a second and third pass. My skin felt moist afterwards with no irritation, something that's particularly important for me as I suffer from rosacea. As with other Proraso products I've tried, the performance is good without being stellar. Others swear by it, and it's definitely worth a try so you can make your own judgement. And at this price point, it won't break the bank.Have only used this twice and it's already helping my skin to combat any razor burn. I definitely prefer this to the regular cream (green tub). Doesn't smell quite as nice as the regular cream but given the quality of this soap this is irrelevant. How to properly use; give your face a thorough rinse in hot or cold water, I prefer cold. Soak your shaving brush for a few minutes, when it's time, circle your shaving brush in the cream without much pressure for about ten seconds, then begin to work the lather directly onto your skin until it's a solid white, usually takes a minute or two, your now ready to shave. Why do it this way? Working the lather onto the skin and not a bowl gives your beard more time to soften, as well as allowing the oatmeal in this soap to do it's thing, keeping your skin healthy. Will definitely be buying this one again.
